Here's just a small selection of places to visit during your stay at West Leas Farm

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden

For generations, people have been captivated by this remarkable place.

Fountains Abbey, just 12 minutes away in the car, is one of the largest and best-preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England. What began as a quiet retreat for monks grew into a grand abbey, their peaceful way of life leaving behind the atmospheric ruins we see today—a powerful glimpse into the medieval world.

Later, John Aislabie, with grand ideas and a love of beauty, transformed the landscape into a stunning water garden filled with tranquil ponds, elegant statues and playful follies, thoughtfully weaving in the abbey’s romantic remains.

Rolling lawns lead down to the river—ideal for a lazy picnic—while winding paths take you into the deer park, where Red, Fallow and Sika deer roam among ancient oaks, limes, and chestnut trees.

Now a World Heritage Site, this truly special place continues to inspire all who visit.

Brimham Rocks

Step into a world shaped by time at Brimham Rocks, just a 20 minute drive from West Leas Farm. Here, towering natural sculptures rise from the landscape like something out of a prehistoric dream. These incredible formations were first created by a powerful river long before the age of dinosaurs—around 100 million years earlier, in fact.

Over millions of years, shifting continents, ice, wind, and rain have sculpted the rocks into strange and striking shapes. With a bit of imagination, you’ll soon be spotting animals in stone—look out for the Dancing Bear, the Eagle, the Gorilla, and even the Turtle. For those who like a bit of adventure, there’s the Smartie Tube to crawl through and the Rocking Stones to balance on.

Many of the best-known formations are just a short walk from the car park, but you could easily spend several hours exploring this dramatic moorland setting. The whole site is a playground for curious minds and active feet.

Recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Brimham Rocks is loved by geologists, walkers, climbers, and families alike. Whether you’re here for the views, the fresh air, or the sense of wonder, this is nature at its most spectacular.

Himalayan Garden & Sculpture Park

Just a 10 minute drive away you'll find the Himalayan Garden & Sculpture Park.

Inspired by the majestic landscapes of the Himalayas, this stunning park and garden is a true feast for the senses. Spread across 45 acres, it’s home to over 20,000 plants—including one of the North’s most impressive collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, and magnolias.

Wander along winding paths through peaceful woodlands, a vibrant arboretum, and tranquil lakes teeming with wildlife. The terrain is wonderfully varied, with some steep sections adding a sense of adventure as you explore.

Adding to the charm are more than 90 contemporary sculptures thoughtfully placed throughout the grounds, each one chosen to complement the natural beauty of its surroundings.

Dogs on leads are very welcome, but please note that the steep paths mean the site isn’t suitable for wheelchair users. Whether you're here for the flora, the art, or the fresh air, this is a truly unique place to explore and unwind.

Hackfall Woods

Today, Hackfall may appear to be a natural woodland—a “beautiful wilderness,” as one 19th-century writer described it, considering it among the most picturesque places in the country. In reality, however, this landscape has been carefully shaped by human hands.

Located near the Masham end of the village of Grewelthorpe in North Yorkshire, Hackfall owes much of its current form to the vision and efforts of the Aislabie family. John Aislabie purchased Hackfall Wood in 1731 for £906. Already renowned for his landscape designs at nearby Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, John laid the groundwork for what would become a designed landscape. His son William added a range of features that still survive today, including follies, grottoes, dramatic viewpoints, waterfalls, and even a fountain.
