Hanging Basket - West Leas Farm Holiday Cottages
In this post, we take a quiet look at what makes summer at West Leas so special. You’ll read about the cottages and their sun-filled gardens, the walking routes and nearby villages, and the simple pleasures of long days in the countryside. Whether you’re planning a family holiday, bringing the dog, or just looking for somewhere peaceful to pause, we’ve shared a little of what you can expect from a stay with us.
When summer arrives at West Leas, it does so quietly. The days begin to stretch, the light lingers in the fields, and the hedgerows fill with bees and birdsong. This is a time of year that suits the land. Everything slows down. The trees breathe deeper. And the cottages, nestled gently above Galphay, become a place to rest, to reconnect, and to enjoy the simple pleasure of time well spent.

There is no rush here. Just golden skies, garden paths, and long evenings filled with the soft hum of the countryside.

A Place to Settle In

West Leas is tucked between the rolling fields of North Yorkshire. From your cottage door, you can see the open land stretching out in every direction. Stone walls run like patchwork through the fields. Sheep graze quietly in the sun. And beyond the horizon, the hills of the Yorkshire Dales rise and fall in gentle rhythm.

This is not the kind of place that demands an itinerary. Days unfold slowly, with walks in the morning, a book in the afternoon, and perhaps a visit to the local pub before the light fades. Whether you are here for a few days or a few weeks, the countryside welcomes you in.

Many guests start their stay with a stroll to Galphay, a small and friendly village with a much-loved pub, The Galphay Inn. It is the kind of place where walkers and cyclists gather after long routes, and where locals are always ready for a chat. From there, footpaths wind through woods, past farms, and into open fields where wildflowers grow thick along the verges.

If you haven’t already, take a moment to read our blog post Welcome to Galphay. It’s a gentle introduction to the village and the peaceful countryside that makes West Leas such a special place to visit.

Cottages Made for Summer

Each of the cottages at West Leas has its own character, with original features from their days as farm buildings. Some are perfect for couples, while others have space for families or small groups. They are self-catering, well-equipped, and thoughtfully laid out, with everything you need for a comfortable and relaxed stay.

In the summer months, guests often spend their mornings outside with a cup of tea and a view of the fields. By mid-afternoon, the garden is full of birds and butterflies. As the sun sets, many cottages catch the last of the light, making evening meals outside a favourite part of the day.

For those bringing dogs, our dog-friendly cottages provide easy access to walks and plenty of safe space to explore. There are no busy roads here, just quiet tracks and open land.

The Freedom of Open Days

Summer in this part of Yorkshire has a rhythm unlike anywhere else. It is not just the warmth, but the sense of space and stillness that makes it special.

You might begin with a trip to Ripon, where the cathedral stands tall above cobbled streets and the Thursday market offers local produce and friendly faces. Or you might visit Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, where deer wander freely and rivers weave through ancient ruins.

For families, the area offers endless options. Brimham Rocks is always a hit with children, with its giant balancing stones and open moorland to climb and explore. The villages of Masham and Pateley Bridge are full of charm, from old-fashioned sweet shops to artisan galleries.

But many guests choose to stay close to West Leas, especially when the weather is good. With the cottages surrounded by farmland and walking routes, there is no need to go far. A picnic in the grass. A long book by the window. A walk to nowhere in particular.

Bringing your horse?
While we don’t have stables on site, during summer we can provide our empty farm shed as a safe, sheltered space for your horse box and tack.

Your horse will enjoy our peaceful grass paddock, and you’ll both love exploring the beautiful local countryside together. With quiet country lanes and a network of scenic bridleways right on the doorstep, there’s plenty to discover in this stunning area of outstanding natural beauty.

Gardens in Bloom

By July, West Leas is alive with the gentle buzz of summer. Bees drift lazily through the air while swallows skim low across the grass. Guests often remark on the quiet beauty of it all, the kind that settles slowly and stays with you long after you leave.

Children love the freedom of the open space. There are no strict schedules here, just fresh air, lush grass and long, endless days that seem to stretch forever.

Barbecues, shared meals, games in the garden. These are the moments that truly matter.

Everyday Magic

It is easy to overlook the small things. But summer at West Leas is full of them. A blackbird singing on a gatepost. The smell of cut grass. A basket of strawberries picked up from a roadside stall. These are the details that give summer its meaning.

Guests tell us they feel calmer here. That time stretches in a different way. That the pressure to do or achieve fades away, replaced by something quieter and more lasting.

Some guests return every year. Others arrive by chance and stay longer than planned. However you find us, the welcome is the same.
